One of the original founders of the Mayflower League and the Island Cup. Vito is a graduate of Natick High School and the University of Alabama where he played football for the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant. Vito moved to Nantucket with his wife, Barbara in 1964 and began his career as a teacher, coach, and administrator. His tenure of 45 years in the Nantucket High School system’s covered a myriad of jobs and responsibilities including: Interim terms as varsity boys and girls basketball coach, golf, track, and softball coach, a term as interim high school Principal, 35 years as a teacher of Physical Education and Director of Athletics. And, most significantly, 45 years as head football coach. Capizzo’s accomplishments as a coach include 293 career wins, 2 undefeated seasons, 12 one loss seasons, 16 Mayflower League, Large Division Championships, 9 Super Bowl Appearances and 3 Super Bowl Victories. Capizzo’s career is marked by a man who gave his heart and soul to educating, coaching, guiding, and helping the youth of Nantucket for 45 years.
