Earl Bruce

Earle “Lefty” Bruce set the city scoring record in 1948 for the 9-0-1 Campers with 23 touchdowns and 138 points in 10 games. That season, Bruce scored the only touchdown for Allegany in a 6-6 tie with Fort Hill. For the 1948 season, Bruce was voted Player of the Year and named to the All-Maryland team at fullback. After high school, he received a scholarship to Ohio State University where, after his playing days were over, he joined Coach Woody Hayes’ staff. Bruce succeeded Coach Hayes at Ohio State in 1979 and went on to compile an 81-26-1 record in nine seasons in Columbus. His coaching record at the college level is 151-90-2 in 21 years. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.
