Both now deceased, Poindexter and Weatherby were honored as Hall of Fame inductees as the two men ultimately responsible for this great tradition. Weatherby is quoted as saying, “The small towns of Canton and Waynesville, struggling to raise spirits after first a depression and then a World War, pitched themselves into the keenest high school football rivalry witnessed at that time in Western North Carolina.”
