Tommy Vaughn is one of the most versatile players in Troy High School football history. In addition to being one of a handful of backs to rush for over a 1,000 yards in a season twice during his career, he still holds nearly every school receiving record more than 50 years after graduating from Troy. Tommy, a 1961 Troy High School graduate, rushed for 1,130 yards in 1959 and 1,117 yards in 1960. He still holds the school record for receiving yards in a career with 1,451 yards and in a season with 703 yards during the 1959 season. He also holds the school records for receiving touchdowns in a career with 25, in a season with 13 and in a single game with 4. Troy went unbeaten against Piqua his junior and senior years, outscoring the Indians by a combined score of 82-0. Following his career at Troy, Tommy went on to play football at Iowa State University, where he became one of the last great two-way players in college football history. Playing both running back and defensive back; earning first-team All-Big 8 honors on both offense and defense. In 1964, he earned All-Big Eight and All-American honors. That same year, he was named Iowa State Athlete of the Year. Tommy was drafted in the fifth round of the 1965 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He would play seven seasons in the NFL all with the Lions. He intercepted nine passes in his NFL career and still ranks in the top 10 in team history for both kickoff and punt returns.
