Roque was a 2 year participant in the Almond Bowl Rivalry. In the 1985 game he was the quarterback for Chico High. Following the 1985 season he was named to the All Eastern Athletic League Football Team. After graduating from Chico High, Roque went on to the University of California Berkeley where he received a degree in Political Science. While at Cal, Roque was a 4 year member of the swim team where he received NCAA All American Status in multiple events. There was a point where he was the American Record holder in the 200 meter breaststroke.

In 1992 Roque qualified in the breaststroke and was a member of the United States Olympic Team that participated in the Barcelona Summer Games.
