Joe Heap

Holy Cross (LA)

Joe was an astonishing halfback and track and field athlete at Holy Cross from1947-1950. He scored 16 touchdowns his sophomore season and lead his team to the Prep League Championships his junior and senior seasons. His 1949 team was state runner up. He earned All-State honors in 1950 and scored 55 touchdowns in his career, a record that stood for almost 3 decades. He capped his senior year by winning 4 events in the state track meet. Joe went on to play at Notre Dame where he was named Academic All-American for 3 consecutive seasons, the only player to ever do so. He led the Irish in pass receptions for 3 years and was the first player to surpass 1000 yards in career rushing and receiving. Joe was a first round pick in the NFL draft by the New York Giants. His football career was cut short as he went on to serve his country in the Air Force. Unfortunately Joe passed away last year…accepting the Hall of Fame trophy for this Holy Cross football legend is Joe’s family his wife Joanne, sons Kent and Holger, daughters Charlotte Shelly, Holle Corenbliph, and Donna Zeigler.
