Laurel opened the 2026 season with a 56–42 comeback victory over West Jones on August 28. The Golden Tornados found themselves down 35–14 late in the second quarter, but responded with a dominant stretch just before halftime and coming out of the half that shifted the momentum of the game. Laurel scored 21 unanswered points during that stretch, using its relentless offensive attack to overcome the deficit and take control of the matchup. The game also featured two kickoff returns for touchdowns, adding to an already high-scoring night. West Jones quarterback Tootie Lindsey passed for more than 250 yards and three touchdowns, but the Mustangs were unable to keep pace with Laurel’s offensive production in the second half. Despite competing throughout the game, West Jones could not slow the Golden Tornados’ ramped-up offense and ultimately took the loss to open its season. With both teams playing their first game of the season, the matchup provided an early opportunity to evaluate each team’s execution, resilience, and ability to respond to momentum swings as the season gets underway.
