With recent redistricting, this rivalry started anew 10 years ago. Both schools are power houses in the area and both are 4-0 coming into the heated matchup. Both teams are likely to make the playoffs but being located five miles part, families have to choose sides. Both teams have players committed to Division 1 schools next fall and team scouts are at the game to check out their signees.

GAME SUMMARY

The two Big Eight Conference teams slugged it out in what proved to be a defensive showdown for much of the game. Verona scored early on a 48 yard pass to senior wide out Jack Herkert with 11:18 in the 2nd quarter. Proving that defense does win championships, Verona held Middleton to one score late in the fourth but Middleton had a chance to tie the score and send it into overtime but the kick sailed wide left. With little time left on the clock and no timeouts for Middleton, Verona ran out the clock and won the game 10-7. It is understood in this area that both schools should make the playoffs and my face each other again later in the year.
