This is no ordinary rivalry; it’s a legacy that dates to 1923, making it the second longest rivalry in Texas high school football history. The passion and intensity exhibited by the San Benito Greyhounds and the Harlingen Cardinals are unparalleled, making this clash a true spectacle.

Last year, the Harlingen Cardinals emerged victorious with a resounding 37-21 win over the San Benito Greyhounds. Both teams entered the game undefeated, adding an extra layer of anticipation and excitement to the already heated contest. This year, San Benito will be looking to turn the tables and avenge last year’s defeat.

The Battle of the Arroyo draws immense crowds, with an estimated 11,000 to 15,000 passionate fans converging on Bobby Morrow Stadium each year.

Rick Ford, founder and CEO of the Great American Rivalry Series, expressed his admiration for the Battle of the Arroyo, stating, “As we celebrate the 20th season of the Great American Rivalry Series, the San Benito vs. Harlingen rivalry is a true testament to the power and tradition of high school football. This clash embodies the heart and soul of the game and reminds us why these rivalries are so cherished.”
