The 34th annual “Island Cup” has the Martha’s Vineyard Vineyarders pitted against the Nantucket Whalers this Saturday afternoon in one of the New England’s most passionate rivalries. These two island teams are separated by a mere 12 miles of ocean off the coast of Cape Cod and have played at least once a season since 1960, except in 2009 when the game was cancelled. Nantucket leads the all-time series in wins, 35-26-3. The game was coined the “Island Cup” in 1978 and the series has been dead even ever since. Nantucket holds a slight 17-16 lead in “Island Cup” victories. The Vineyarders have won the last 8 “Island Cups” including last season’s 10-7 victory.
