Dating back to 1972, this is one of the most intense rivalries in Mississippi. This series has seen everything from blowouts, to nail-biters, to ties, as the Lafayette Commodores own the series lead 26-23-2, with only 1 point separating the teams all time. However, the Oxford Chargers have won eight out of the last ten matchups and are hoping to even up the series. Last season saw the commodores take home the win, for the first time in five years, in an exciting game. This year is sure to be another thriller, as Lafayette hopes to build a winning streak and Oxford hopes to bounce back and take down their rival.
Lafayette put the first 6 points on the board tonight after a long pass and a short-field run into the endzone. Oxford answered with a big pass and a touchdown run. After a two-point conversion, the Chargers surged ahead 15-6 in the 1st quarter. Lafayette took it to the house on the ensuing kickoff, however Oxford reciprocated, with huge return for 60 yards into the endzone. In the second quarter, both defenses settled in, resulting in four straight 3 and outs. Oxford broke the defensive stalemate and scored with just under 3 minutes left in the half extending their lead, 29-13. After picking off the Commodores, the Chargers drove for the TD and sent this rivalry into halftime with a score of 36-13. In the second half, Oxford ran down the clock and scored on a long drive extending their lead to 43-13. After a TD at the beginning of the 4th, the Commodores make it a 43-19 game with 7:52 left in the game. Evening up the long battled series between the cross town rivals, the Chargers take home the W 43-19.
