One of the oldest and most intense high school football rivalries in Western Michigan is the Lowell v. East Grand Rapids High School, dating back some 30 years when the teams joined the same conference.

Joe Glendening

East Grand Rapids

Joe played in this rivalry his JR & SR years with great impact – like his Jr year when he ran for a 60 yard touchdown in the 4th Quarter. Joe went on to be a 3-time All-American at Hillsdale College and was a finalist for the Harlon Hill award.

History favors the East Grand Rapids Pioneers who hold the winning record in the rivalry series (46-22-2). This year’s game was possibly the most significant since the teams began the gridiron feud due to two factors: Sophomore sensation Darby Dean, the first female football player in Lowell school history; and county redistricting that makes this the final rivalry game played by the neighboring cities. Some 4,500 spectators turned out for this final rivalry game despite the intense wind and bitter cold elements!
