The annual meeting between the Pumas and the Bulldogs is always a much anticipated game as it is one of the oldest rivalries in the nation. The teams have gone head to head 147 times since 1906 and once again looking to etch their names into the coveted Copper Pick. The Copper Pick has been awarded to the game’s winning team since 1945. Each game, the winning team’s name is engraved onto the copper plates that surround the trophy.

Christopher is a 3-year letterman on the varsity football team. In 2015 he was MVP and in 2016 he was offensive player of the year. Also in 2014, he was offensive player of the year for basketball. Next year he plans to pursue and criminal justice degree.
Tony Samaniego

Douglas

Tony has been a 3-year starter for the Bisbee football program. The 6’2” 190lb senior is expected to have a big season under center for the Pumas and is a multi-purpose defender who is expected to start at DE. Not only is Tony a great student and football player but he is also a strong leader and is one of pumas captains this year.

GAME SUMMARY

The Bisbee vs. Douglas showdown Friday night was a thriller. The Pumas overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit and came away with a wild 22-21 win returning “The Pick” back to Bisbee after having it in Douglas for the past year. The Bulldogs scored once in the first quarter and once again in the second quarter and took a 14-point lead. Midway through the third quarter, Puma quarterback and Scholar Athlete award winner, Tony Samaniego, hit team captain Sergio Montoya for a 4-yard touchdown pass. Troy Ferestad’s, Most Valuable Player of the game, capped the two- point conversion which pulled Bisbee within six at 14-8. Douglas clung to a fourth quarter lead, before Ferestad ran in the successful two-point conversion giving the Pumas their only lead of the night and a 22-21 victory.
