In this 50 year old rivalry matchup Page was the favored team; they had a 5-1 record, have 30 seniors on their roster, and have won the rivalry game two years in a row. The Whirlies of Grimsley High School, however, were hoping to sink the Page Pirates. Administrations at both schools were extremely pleased and grateful that the Great American Rivalry Series, sponsored by the United States Marine Corps, was featuring their game for 2009. They promised that this game would not disappoint and the Pirates and Whirlies proved them right.

GAME SUMMARY

After the scholarship presentation, the teams listened to a motivational speech and the game got underway. Page scored early in the first quarter on a rushing drive from Drew Rogers. Grimsley, not to be outdone, answered with an 85 yard touchdown run from Lashawn Brown to tie the game 7-7. The Pirates' offense just couldn't be stopped, answering the Grimsley touchdown a minute later to bring the game 14-7. Page would score once more before the half on a touchdown from Justin Gorman, later named the United States Marine Corps Rivalry Series MVP. The teams left the field with Page leading 21-7. During halftime, Sgt. Santos presented both Paul McGee of Grimsley and Carlos Doggett of Page with their Hall of Fame awards. Both recipients enthusiastically thanked Sgt. Santos for the honor.
