Jason started as Quarterback for Martha’s Vineyard for three years and went 2-1 vs. Nantucket. In 1991 playing Nantucket on Martha’s Vineyard, both teams for 10-1, had the Island Cup up for grabs, a mayflower League Championship and a Super Bowl berth on the line. Jason led his team to a 14-6 victory while throwing 2 touchdown passes. The Vineyard would go on to win its first Super Bowl Championship. In 1992, now a Captain in his senior year, the Vineyard traveled to Nantucket with both teams once again: 9-1, the Island Cup up for grabs, a Mayflower League Championship and a Super Bowl berth at stake. Trailing 12-0 with 4:46 left in the fourth quarter, Jason orchestrated a 14-12 come from behind victor, the first Vineyard victory on Nantucket in 20 years. Jason threw 2 touchdown passes in the comeback. This victory propelled the Vineyard into the playoffs and led to their second Super Bowl win. Jason continued playing football in college, attending Fitchburg State College, where he set school and league passing records. Jason currently works on Martha’s Vineyard and is in his second year as an Assistant Varsity football coach.
Vito Capizzo
Nantucket
One of the original founders of the Mayflower League and the Island Cup. Vito is a graduate of Natick High School and the University of Alabama where he played football for the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant. Vito moved to Nantucket with his wife, Barbara in 1964 and began his career as a teacher, coach, and administrator. His tenure of 45 years in the Nantucket High School system’s covered a myriad of jobs and responsibilities including: Interim terms as varsity boys and girls basketball coach, golf, track, and softball coach, a term as interim high school Principal, 35 years as a teacher of Physical Education and Director of Athletics. And, most significantly, 45 years as head football coach. Capizzo’s accomplishments as a coach include 293 career wins, 2 undefeated seasons, 12 one loss seasons, 16 Mayflower League, Large Division Championships, 9 Super Bowl Appearances and 3 Super Bowl Victories. Capizzo’s career is marked by a man who gave his heart and soul to educating, coaching, guiding, and helping the youth of Nantucket for 45 years. It is with our sincere and deepest appreciation that we recognize Coach Capizzo with this award.
