In the historic Illinois battle labeled the “Route 3 Rivalry” the Waterloo Bulldogs and Columbia Eagles both came in riding high on crucial week one wins. The first half was all Bulldogs, a field goal on the opening drive and a three-yard rushing touchdown late in the second quarter sent Waterloo into the break up 10-0. However, the Eagles came out of the half with desperation, scoring 14 unanswered after a punt return from eventual GARS MVP Jase Nelson. Waterloo responded late in the fourth to take a 18-14 lead, but with 1:30 left the Eagles drove down and scored the game-winning touchdown in dramatic fashion leaving just 15 seconds on the clock. After a pick six on the ensuing Waterloo drive, the Eagles added insurance to their 27-18 win, stopping the Bulldogs from winning their third GARS trophy in as many years.
