Doyle Stadium is hosting another historic classic in the 21st season of the Great American Rivalry Series as the Mt. Carmel Caravan face the St. Rita Mustangs for their 101st meeting. This matchup began in 1923 and has been controlled by the Caravan, leading the all-time series 66-33-1, including a dominant 38-7 victory in their last meeting. However, the Mustangs are hungry to close the gap in the “Battle for Chicago.”

The Caravan have been no stranger to recent success, winning back-to-back 7A state championships and boasting a combined 27-1 record in their last two seasons. St. Rita will look to change the narrative of this series and return to their success from the 2021-2022 season when they made a 7A State Championship game appearance.

The “Battle for Chicago” takes place on September 6th, 2024, and will be filled with 4,000 fans on the edge of their seats for this thrilling Chicago contest.

SCHOLAR ATHLETES

Adam George

St. Rita

Adam George is a consistent member of the Dean’s List with Academic Honors all while playing Football, being a Student Ambassadors, and a member of the Fantasy Sports Club as well as Big Brothers and National Honor Society. Adam has been a leader for his team on and off the field and St. Rita has been very lucky to have him!
Marty Mann

Mt. Carmel

Marty is an outstanding student-athlete. In addition to being a top-ten student and vice-president of the student council, Marty is an important contributor on the varsity football team on the offensive side of the ball. He can play at either tight end position, and perhaps more crucially, he leads the "red hats," signaling the offensive play-calls from the sidelines. As a senior, he is an excellent example for the underclassmen to follow, doing whatever he can to help the team, and always doing things the right way. Marty is hoping to attend the United State Naval Academy!

GAME SUMMARY

In a contest that was exciting from the first drive of the game, Jack Elliott hit wide receiver Quenten Burrell on a 46-yard touchdown pass to take an early 7-0 Caravan lead. The deadly duo of Elliott and Burrell continued to shine as they connected on a 65-yard pass on their next drive, setting up a rushing touchdown by eventual game MVP Jack Elliott. The St. Rita defense forced a turnover and showed some dominance on that side of the ball to keep the game competitive, but the Mt. Carmel defense was also imposing, not allowing the Mustangs to get on the board all night. The Mt. Carmel offense used a strong rushing attack in the second half to keep the clock moving and scored two more times, winning the game 28-0 in the 101st match up of the "Battle for Chicago".
