The 117th annual ‘Battle of the Ax’ game is the oldest high school football rivalry in the state of Texas. The intensity of this rivalry is incredibly passionate the entire week leading up to the game with spirit days and pep rallies that would get even a random onlooker pumped up. Munson Stadium is sold out with 6,500 strong; so much so that the bands have to play on the filed during the game to make room for all of the fans.

GAME SUMMARY

After a first quarter where Denison went up 14-0, Sherman stormed back to close the lead to 1, 14-13. From that point on however, the Yellow Jackets and their spread offense seemed to be the better team. The game was still within reach after the 3rd quarter for the Bearcats but Denison pulled away and won the game with a final score of 42-20. Coach Rogers and his Yellow Jackets were pumped up after the game and proudly hoisted the ‘Ax’ and Rivalry Series trophy in front of their student section.
