The Civil War Rivalry Game that took place on Gernard Field at Toms River North High School started out fast and strong. From the first play of the game until the very last. Toms River North was intent on keeping the winning title, and it showed. With a final score of 55-13, there was never a dull moment between the area’s well known, Civil War. North has dominated this series over the last 15 year, winning all match-ups but one. Overall the Indians have the lead in this 45 year tradition. This Rivalry dates back to 1972 and it’s produced some memorable moments and great upsets.

Amir Dew graduated from TR North in 1996. He was All-Shore and All- County 1994-95 with 2,975 total yards rushing. He had 96 career touchdowns and was selected for the Star Ledger Century’s Best Football Team in the 1990 decade. He received a football scholarship from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. 1999-2001 he had a total of 3,623 total yards rushing and 32 career touchdowns. 1999-2001 he was 1st team All PSAC Running Back. He was 2001 associated press 2nd team and All American Running Back.

The fall of 1973…Toms River North takes the lead on a pass play and leads the Indians for the first time 7-0. On the kick-off Toms River South uses a return called “razzle-dazzle right.” Cliff takes a pitch from Bill Conway and scampers down the sideline after a key block by John Weirhenauer for a touchdown. Cliff’s Brother, Ken Scores on a two point conversion and the Indians take the lead. Ken also scores later in the game and T. R. South wins 14-6. The fall of 1974…Cliff played defense for the entire game and the Indians win 17-8. The fall of 1975…the game was scoreless until Cliff scored on a 36 yard interception return in the first quarter. Cliff had another interception in the third quarter to stop the Mariners after they reached toms River South 19 yard line. T. R.South. Cliff was captain of the football team his senior year. He was captain of the wrestling team during his junior and senior years when the team was ranked 2nd in the state with a record of 19-0. He was a two time district champ and a one time regional champ. He was the freshman class president, vice-president of the student council, a member of national honor society, and New Jersey boys state participant. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1980 with a degree in business administration and is a licensed certified public accountant. He married Teri Signoino, the coach’s daughter, and has three children, Mathew, Jason and Jared and daughter-n-law Kate , all Toms River South graduates. He’s also the grandfather of Ella and Sophie.

GAME SUMMARY

The Toms River North Mariners football team won Friday's home conference game against rival school Toms River South by a score of 55-13. Senior quarterback and Rivalry Series MVP, Mike Husni threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 80 yards and two more touchdowns to set multiple records and lead the top-ranked Mariners past the rival Indians in “The Civil War”. Husni needed 54 yards rushing to become the first player in Shore Conference history to have 1,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in three straight seasons, and he was able to accomplish this goal on Friday night.
