This is one of the most heated rivalries in Vermont. Although the schools are over an hour away from each other, the Rivalry is strong and the feeling trickles down through the entire community. The stands are always packed and the fans fill the grassy areas to use as standing room. The rivalry started in 1965 and has been played every year since. The Raiders won last year so the Hurricanes were out for revenge.

HALL OF FAME

Ernie Sule

Rutland

Ernie Sule played center on the 1963 Rutland HS football team and later graduated with the class of 1964. He went onto serve his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. For many years Ernie has been seen working the sidelines of many Rutland HS athletic events as well as state championship events and other events such as the Vermont-New Hampshire Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. Ernie is an individual that can be seen at Rutland HS at any time of the day or night setting up fields, filming games or just making sure that our student-athletes are ready to go at a moments notice. Ernie is a pillar of our school community and lately it has become a family affair with the addition of his two grandchildren Annie and Ryan helping in the same capacity. We would like to thank Ernie and his family for all that they do, for all of us.
Brandon Bergeron

Hartford

Brandon was one of the captains of the 2008 State Champions team which beat Rutland. He called the defense from the safety position and was a critical piece of the Hurricane stout defense. On the offensive side he carried the ball as well as caught it for the teams fair share of touchdowns. Even though the Hurricanes’ had the Gatorade player of the year, Brandon was a very visible stand out player. His leadership qualities are commendable. He is a player that never quit and left everything on the field. Brandon went on to play and start for Castleton University at safety where he was also an impact player. He currently coaches the running backs and secondary at Hartford. He is a positive role model and inspiration for their players. Head Coach Matt Trombly is grateful to have such an outstanding coach as part of his staff.

GAME SUMMARY

Down 27-7 at halftime, Hartford charged back for a 34-33 win over Rutland at Rutland High School. The temperature was cold and the night was rainy but that didn’t stop the teams from bringing out their best. The first half belonged to the Raiders but the second half was all Hurricanes. Credit for the amazing comeback was all due to the Hurricanes Quarterback #12 Tyler Hamilton. He successfully rallied his team to the comeback win and led the charges by rushing and passing in the second half.
