In this historic North Carolina football rivalry, the A.L. Brown Wonders and Concord Spiders faced off in the “Battle for the Bell.” During the first possessions, each team battled, and it appeared that a competitive game was in store. However, the momentum shifted in A.L. Brown’s favor with a scoop-and-score touchdown midway through the first quarter. From that point on, the Wonders were dominant in all facets of the game. The Spiders couldn’t contain the rushing attack of A.L. Brown, and eventual MVP running back Lemar Grier took over the game. Concord struggled to move the ball consistently against the stout A.L. Brown defense. They showed flashes at times on both sides of the ball but were unable to find the end zone due to penalties and negative plays. A.L. Brown prevailed in this matchup, 38–3 and improved to 1–1 on the season.
