Central 6, Northeast 3 (11/28/13)

November 29, 2013

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Wooden Horse belongs to Central.

The Central Lancers celebrated a 6-3 overtime win over the Northeast Vikings in the annual “Wooden Horse Game” on Thursday at Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium. The game was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sport.

With a scoreless game at the end of regulation, the Vikings opened overtime with a 20-yard field goal from Tyler Gormley. But Walt Pegues (86 yards) answered with a 9-yard run then a 1-yard run for the game-winning score for the Lancers.

Central hadn’t won in the series since 2004. Northeast leads the all-time series, which began in 1892, 56-52-10.

This was the final game for both Central (7-5) and Northeast (5-7).

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
