Woodbridge 48, Gar-Field 20 (9/21/12)

September 22, 2012

Gorgeous night for football in Woodbridge, VA as Gar-Field hosted Woodbridge in one of the longest on-going rivalries in Virginia football. Woodbridge came in as the favorites and didn’t disappoint.

Woodbridge scored the first TD less than four minutes into the game after taking the opening kickoff down the field and scores the first TD of the night. Gar-field answered back with a score of its own less than three minutes later as Shakeem Copeland runs it in for the score to tie the game at 7-7.

Woodbridge regained the lead as Evrett Edwards catches 25-yd TD catch. The failed 2pt conversation put Woodbridge in the lead, 13-7. The high scoring first quarter continues as Jaylen Avent scored on a TD catch to make it 20-7 Woodbridge. Copeland scored another TD for Gar-Field with less than a minute in left in the half to make it 20-13 after a failed extra point.

Gar-field came out with the ball in the second half. The Indians put together a nice drive that stalled on 4th and 6th. They tried to settle for a field goal, but it ended up blocked, shifting all the momentum in Woodbridge’s favor. Avent picks up his second TD of the night, this one rushing midway through the third to give Woodbridge 27-13 lead.

Gar-field puts a decent drive together, but the pass deep down the sideline is intercepted by senior DB Kwei Kweifio and returned back into Gar-Field territory. This led to Avent picking up his third TD of the night just four minutes into the final quarter on a five-yard run to the left corner of the end zone to give the Vikings a 34-13 lead.

Gar-field doesn’t quit and drives down the field, Copeland has nice run up the middle, but his fumble on the five is scooped up by Woodbridge in their own end zone for the touchback. Kwei Kweifio went on to score on a 50yd run on the ensuing possession for Woodbrige to give the Vikings a 41-13 lead. Jamil Williams added another touchdown for the Vikings to seal the win. Gar-field added a late touchdown for the bring the final score to 48-20.

Jaylen Avent earned the MVP honors. The senior running back/defensive back, rushed for 276 yards on just 17 carries and had 3 TD’s.
