September 14, 2013

WATSONVILLE, CA — Watsonville hung on for another W.

The Watsonville Wildcatz held on for a 27-20 win over the Santa Cruz Cardinals on Friday night. Over 5,000 fans attended the game at Watsonville High School, which hosted the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

The rivalry is one of the oldest in California, having started in 1908. Watsonville leads the all-times series 54-37-5.

Quarterback Alex Carillo was named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player after rushing for 105 yards and a TD and throwing for another score. His 92-yard TD run gave the Wildcatz a 27-14 cushion.

A 67-yard TD pass from Tyler Shank to Alex Morris eventually cut the lead to one-possession with a minute to go, but Watsonville was able to hang on.

Back Dustin Rocha added 81 yards and three scores for the Wildcatz.

Watsonville (2-0) hosts Aptos on Friday night, while Santa Cruz (1-1) is at Irvington on Saturday.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
