Media Release: Walton (GA) vs. Lassiter (GA)

September 1, 2015

Marietta, GA: August 27, 2015 – The Great American Rivalry Series is proud to announce it will feature the East Cobb Super Bowl between annual rivals the Walton Raiders and the Lassiter Trojans in the Series’ third weekend of games for 2015. This 43 year old rivalry game will be presented this year by the United States Army and played on September 4 at Raider Valley Stadium in Marietta, GA. Highlighting some of the longest running rivalries in high school football, the 2015 Great American Rivalry Series will feature 100 showdowns nationwide. All of these games come with great football, hard earned sweat and a heavy dose of hometown pride.

For the 12th year, the Great American Rivalry Series has selected an exclusive collection of top-notch rivalries across the country, covering 40 states and over 100 cities throughout the country. Wrapped in tradition, these annual battles excite entire communities, while celebrating the schools, their teams, and their fans. We Know Friday NightsTM

The Raiders and Trojans have been playing this rivalry since 1982 with Walton holding the lead at 20-13. At the end of the 2011 season the two teams met in Raider Valley in the Georgia State Semifinals. In that game the Raiders held on to a slim lead with less than a minute left and held the Trojans inside the 10 yard line. It was their second meeting of the season. Lassiter took home the wins in 2012 and 2013 and Walton won again in 2014. Both schools are heavily recruited and many of their former athletes dot the rosters of SEC colleges.

The Walton-Lassiter game was selected as one of the top 100 must-see match ups for the 12th Annual Series and is the keynote game of the season in the Marietta, GA area. Both teams will vie for State Championship hopes and a victory in this game will jumpstart them in that direction.

An in-school Rivalry Fitness Challenge will also take place between the two schools during the week leading up to the game. The school that proves to be the fittest will be awarded a crystal trophy at halftime of the game. The winning team on the field earns year-long bragging rights with the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Army. The game’s Most Valuable Player and the top student-athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series.
