St. Vincent-St.Mary 33, Archbishop Hoban 27 (3OT) (09/26/2014)

September 27, 2014

Often referred to as the “Akron Holy War,” this rivalry between the Fighting Irish of STVM and the Knights of Hoban has always proven to be a game to remember year in and year out. The rivalry was renewed after a 20 year absence in 1996 and since then it has been played at a neutral site due to the large crowds. The winner of this rivalry gains possession of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Shillelagh trophy.

STVM jumped out to the early lead but entered the 4th quarter down 17-12. The Irish got the ball back with 4:00 left in the game and managed to get a TD to go up 20-17. Archbishop Hoban then tied the game up with a last second FG to send it into OT. In overtime there was a blocked FG and a fumble; STVM finally edged out the Knights 33-27 in 3 OT!
