St. Joseph 38, Bergen Catholic 37 (9/22/12)

September 23, 2012

Fans of St. Joseph and Bergen Catholic came out and packed the stands of Dinallo Stadium. Over 7,500 fans came out to witness one of the best games in the New Jersey storied rivalry. It was the first overtime game ever in the series and St. Joseph’s first win over Bergen Catholic since 2008. Both teams came into the game ranked in the Top-3 of The Record Football Top 25 with Bergen Catholic just cracking the national Top 100 with last week’s win over Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas.

St. Joseph raced out to a 21-0 lead just before halftime. Jeff Farina ran for 2 touchdowns and Spencer Aukamp connected with Ricky Jeune on a 25-yard touchdown pass. BC quarterback Jonathan Germano linked up with John Feaster on a 46-yard touchdown pass to bring the Crusaders within 14 at halftime. The teams went into the locker room at 21-7.

Bergen Catholic scored twice in the 3rd quarter and converted a 2-point conversion to take the lead at 22-21. Mark Fossati added a 29-yard field goal for the Green Knights to put them back up 24-22. The Bergen Catholic defense came up with a big safety to tie the game back up at 24 a piece. Fossati came up with arguably the biggest play in series history when he stripped BC’s Germano and returned it for a 76-yard touchdown. Fossati added the extra point to give his Green Knights a 31-24 lead. The Green Knights defense stopped BC with just under 3:30 minutes to play but could not run the clock out. Germano led one last drive that ended with a touchdown pass to J.J. Kulcsar with about a minute to play to force overtime.

Spencer Aukamp hit Quai Jefferson on a 25-yard pass to put the Green Knights up 38-31 in overtime. Germano was quick to answer, hitting Kyle Queiro for a touchdown to bring the Crusaders within 1. The ensuing extra point was just wide of the goalposts and the Green Knights celebrated the victory.

Mark Fossati was named the MVP of the game. He hit all 5 extra point attempts, a 29-yard field goal, caught 3 passes for 50 yards and sent 2 kickoffs into the endzone for touchbacks. Aukamp threw for 152 yards on 9 of 15 passing with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also added 95 yards rushing. Germano completed 21 of his 28 passes for 278 yards to go with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Germano added 72 yards rushing on 14 carries.
