New London 9, Norwich Free Academy 7 (11/28/13)

NORWICH, CT — New London has been on a roll.

With their eighth straight win this season, the New London Whalers beat the Norwich Free Academy Wildcats 9-7 in the annual “Route 32 Rivalry” on Thursday at Alumni Field. Over 5,000 fans attended the game that was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sport.

With the win — which snapped the Wildcats’ six-game winning streak overall — the Whalers won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division title.

Garrett Burdick kicked what proved to be a game-winning a 40-yard field goal with over 5 minutes left to lift New London to the win in a series that dates back to 1875.

Orrin Parke was named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player after rushing for 107 yards and a 22-yard TD in the third quarter.

Khaleed Exum-Strong ran for 94 yards and a 58-yard TD for Norwich Free Academy. Marcus Outlow added 119 yards before leaving with an injury.

Both teams enter CIAC state playoff action next week with New London (8-2) taking on Middletown and Norwich Free Academy (8-2) facing Southington.
