October 16, 2013

MEDFORD, OR – The annual “Black and Blue Game” is on tap for Friday at 10 p.m. (EST), as the South Medford Panthers face the North Medford Black Tornado at Spiegelberg Stadium. More than 6,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

South Medford has won six straight in the series after last season’s convincing 38-3 win. North Medford leads the all-time series, however, 14-13.

The Panthers, coached by Bill Singler, went 8-3 last season but are off to a 2-5 start after a 32-31 loss to Grants Park.

The Black Tornado, coached by Mike Mitchell, clinched their first winning season since 2005 with a 34-7 win over South Eugene in their last game. Junior quarterback Troy Fowler and junior back Nick Janakes combined for 231 total yards and four TDs in the Black Tornado’s sixth straight win.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
