The Parkersburg Big Red will face the Parkersburg South Patriots in a rugged cross-town rivalry Friday night. This annual rivalry dates back to 1967 and is the biggest rivalry in the state of West Virginia. Parkersburg South won last year’s matchup by shutting out the Big Red 17-0, and has won 4 of the last 7 meetings. However, Parkersburg leads the all-time series against the Patriots, 33-12.
The Parkersburg South Patriots are looking to get back to the state championship, a feat they have not accomplished since they won their 1st title in 2003. In 2011, the Patriots recorded their first playoff win since their title run in 2003. The Patriots finished with a 7-5 overall record on their way to an appearance in the quarterfinals of the MVSSAC Class AAA playoffs. The 2012 Patriot team returns a ton of talent from last year’s team. Senior quarterback Tyler Bolen will be back under center and with him returns his favorite target, senior Braxton Johnson. The Patriots also return 1st-team, all-state senior Logan Cox at wide receiver. The running game will boast a few different running backs that will see carries. Senior Jordan Quiocho will see the bulk of the carries as he returns from a 1,000+ yard season last year. Seniors Cody Hively and Nathan Perkins as well as Logan Cox will all see carries at some point throughout the season. The Patriot defense will be a strong point for the 2012 season. The defense was one of the top 5 defenses in West Virginia last season and returns most of its starters. Seniors Jake Fieler and Alex Williams return on the defensive line. Quiocho will play defensive back on top of his running back duties. The Patriots enter the game against the Big Red with a 3-3 record.
The Big Red of Parkersburg High finished the 2011 season with a 7-4 record and a berth in the WVSSAC AAA playoffs where they lost to Huntington in the 1st round. The Big Red only return 7 starters from last year as they look to get back to the playoffs and win the state title for the first time since 2007. Parkersburg High has won 11 state championships, including back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007. Junior Aaron Roberts will try to lead the Big Red back to the playoffs in his first year as starting quarterback. Senior Matt Santer will help Roberts ease into the position. Santer returns as one of the state’s top receivers. The backfield will consist of a running back tandem in senior Adam Lindamood and junior Chandler Hamilton. Sophomore Dan Fox and junior Dylan Thomas will lineup as wing backs for the Big Red. The offensive line will be a bit of a question mark for Parkersburg. Senior D.J. Carozza is the only returning starter on the offensive line. Defensively, seniors Travis Doss and Cameron McCoy will be the on the line while Fox, Thomas and senior Ethan Bussey will lineup as cornerbacks. Hamilton and senior Skyler Terrell will be strong safeties while Santer will handle the free safety duties. The Big Red comes into Friday’s battle with a 4-2 record.
