PREVIEW: La Marque vs. Texas City (TX)

LA MARQUE, TX – The Texas City Stingarees will cross 31st Street to face the La Marque Cougars in the annual “Battle of the Bay” on Friday at 8:30 p.m. (EST) in front of 6,000 fans at Etheredge Stadium. The game is part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

La Marque and Texas City will be meeting for the 56th time with La Marque holding a 33-19-3 all-time series lead with a 34-21 win last season. The rivalry began in 1959 and is one of Greater Houston area’s best. The schools are separated by just seven miles.

Both teams opened the seasons with blowout wins last Friday night. The Cougars rolled 32-7 over Ball, as junior quarterback LaDarrian Ellis-Jones and senior back Alan Cooper accounted for 265 of the team’s 432 total yards. The Stingarees, meanwhile, shut out Dickinson 48-0, as senior back D’Onta Foreman had 148 yards and 3 TDs.

La Marque, coached by Mike Jackson, went 11-2 last season. The team returns 12 starters, including Ellis-Jones, who rushed for 1,148 yards and 14 TDs.

Texas City finished 9-3 last season under coach Leland Surovik. Senior quarterback Andrew Allen returns after throwing 16 TDs, while twins D’Onta and Armanti Foreman – both Texas commits – are also back. Junior linebacker D’Vonta Hinton leads the defense after recording 172 tackles last season.
