October 8, 2013

GROSSE POINTE WOODS, MI – The Grosse Pointe North Norsemen and the Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils will go head-to-head on Friday at 7 p.m. (EST) at Grosse Pointe North High School. Over 6,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Army and Hibbett Sports.

Last season, the Blue Devils won their third consecutive game (all three of which were decided by eight points or less) against the Norsemen for the first time ever. The Norsemen hold a 28-16 lead in the all-time series, which began in 1968.

Grosse Pointe North, coached by Frank Sumbera, went 7-4 last season and are currently 4-2. It has lost two of three, however, including giving up a 20-point, fourth-quarter lead in a 35-34 loss to Fraser in its last game.

After going 8-2 last season, Grosse Pointe South is off to a 3-3 start but is coming off a 33-7 rout of Port Huron Northern.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
