September 25, 2013

HILLSBORO, OR – For the 33rd time, the Glencoe Crimson Tide and the Hillsboro Spartans will square off on Friday at 10 p.m. (EST) at Hare Field. Over 5,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

Glencoe beat Hillsboro 50-7 last season for its first back-to-back wins in the series since 2004-2005. Glencoe holds a commanding 23-9 lead in the all-time series, which began in 1980.

The Crimson Tide, who went 6-5 last season under coach Steve Jones, are off to a 2-2 start with a 6-0 win over Newberg in their last game. Senior Kainoa Hanchett returned a fumble 56 yards for the score in the win.

The Spartans hadn’t won game in two years entering this season, but have opened the season 2-2 under coach Adam Reese. They are coming off a 45-29 loss to Tualatin, however, a game in which junior quarterback Matt Jones threw for 325 yards and three TDs along with running for another score.

In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
