PREVIEW: Fountain Valley vs. Edison (CA)

October 23, 2012

The Fountain Valley Barons and the Edison Chargers will face off in “The Battle for the Bell” this Friday night at Orange Coast College Stadium in California. The winning team gets to display the bell in their schools administration offices. Edison defeated the Barons 14-10 last season and has extended their winning streak to 7 straight games in the series that dates back to 1969. The Chargers lead the all-time series 29-14-1.

The Edison Chargers won the Sunset League in 2011 with an impressive 8-3 record. The Chargers lost to Tesoro in the 1st round of the Pac-5 Division playoffs. This year, the Sunset League moves from the Pac-5 to the Southwest Division of the Division 4 Southern Section. The Chargers have a group of returning starters that are sure to help them on their Sunset League title defense. Senior Alex Torgersen returns at quarterback. Edison will have a trio of seniors that will receive the bulk of carries in the backfield, led by Donald Rice, Marquis Ross and Elijah Herrera. Herrera was an all-league performer last year. Seniors Trevor Borkowski and Marcus Stepancich have established themselves as the primary receivers in the offense. Much of the success of the Chargers this season can be credited to their massive offensive line. The Chargers have one of Orange County’s biggest lines with the average weight being just under 300 pounds. Tico Fuga and Jeremiah Frost (358 pounds) will lead the o-line. Defensively, the Chargers will start 9 seniors. Derek Baljeu and Garrett Garcia will lead the d-line at the end positions. Trenton Aschoff and Alejandro Perez will look to stop the run at outside linebacker. The lone juniors Jeremy Maxwell and Kiante Goudeau will shut down receivers at cornerback. Edison has started off with a 7-1 record, opening up 3-0 in Sunset League play. Head Coach Dave White’s team is right on pace to repeat as league champions and advance deep into the Southwest Division playoffs.

The Fountain Valley Barons went 4-6 in 2011, notching just one win in each of the past two seasons in the Sunset League. The 2012 season should be different, as the Barons return 7 starters on offense and 5 on defense. Senior Chris d’Entremont will return under center for Fountain Valley. He will have seniors Wyatt Christensen and Jason Baker back as his go to receivers. Christensen returns from a pelvic injury he suffered last season and will also see a lot of time as running back for the Barons. He was voted 1st-team All-Sunset League last season. Backing him up will be Shavony Drew, a transfer from Centennial of Compton. Senior 1st-team All-Sunset League Sean Finley returns to lead the defense at outside linebacker. Finley is one of the area’s best linebackers and has been offered by Arizona among others. Seniors Nick Tipple and J.D. Hinnant will lineup as defensive ends. The secondary will be led by senior Jason Baker and sophomore Ryan Finley at cornerback and Shavony Drew at free safety. Derek Huynen returns as one of the state’s best kickers/punters. The Barons are off to a 3-6 start to the 2012 season. They have opened up 0-3 in the Sunset League and look to get a much needed win against the Chargers Friday night.
