PREVIEW: DeMatha vs. Our Lady of Good Counsel (MD)

September 25, 2013

HYATTSVILLE, MD – The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title will once again be at stake when the DeMatha Stags play the Our Lady of Good Counsel Falcons on Friday at 7 p.m. (EST) at DeMatha High School. Over 6,000 fans are expected to attend a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

The last 10 WCAC titles have either gone to the Stags or the Falcons with the Falcons winning the last four. Our Lady of Good Counsel has won four straight in the series, which includes two wins last season (13-10 and 26-14).

DeMatha went 9-3 last season and is coached by Elijah Brooks. Senior receiver Chris Jones and junior back Taiwan Deal are both Wisconsin commits. Deal ran for 131 yards and two scores to help DeMatha move to 4-1 with a 26-21 win over St. John’s.

Our Lady of Good Counsel is coached by Bob Milloy and is off to a 3-2 start after closing last season with 11 straight wins to finish at 11-1. But it’s coming off a 30-20 upset loss to Gonzaga, which hadn’t beaten Our Lady of Good Counsel since 2002. Junior receiver Keon Paye finished with four catches for 202 yards and TDs of 60, 65 and 78 in the loss.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
