CARSON, CA – The Carson Colts will try to continue their dominance over the Banning Pilots on Friday at 10 p.m. (EST) at Carson High School. More than 8,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Army and Hibbett Sports.
Carson has won 14 straight against Banning, including a 49-0 rout last season. The rivalry between schools separated by just three miles came about because of each team’s dominance in the 1970s and 1980s in the Los Angeles area.
After opening the season with four straight losses, the Colts have reeled off four straight wins after a 56-0 win over Gardena. They went 6-7 last season under coach Kevin McCall and are led by junior quarterback Kiki Flores, who has thrown for close to 1,000 yards and 13 scores.
The John Aponte-coached Pilots went 3-7 last season and are 4-4 in 2013. They lost to San Pedro 45-6 in their last game. Leading the way are senior quarterback Austin Mendoza (1,343 yards and 12 TDs) and senior back Jacob Ortiz (836 yards and 6 TDs).
