PREVIEW: Byrnes vs. Gaffney (SC)

DUNCAN, SC – A big matchup looms in South Carolina, as the Byrnes Rebels and the Gaffney Indians meet on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (EST) at Nixon Field. Over 18,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

Byrnes and Gaffney have combined for 28 state titles with Gaffney winning in 2012 (34-22 over Dutch Fork) and Byrnes winning in 2011 (over Gaffney) and 2010. The two have combined for 10 of the last 14 4A state titles.

The Rebels have won three straight regular-season matchups with the Indians, including 22-18 last season. The Rebels also beat the Indians 21-19 in the state semifinals after scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Byrnes, ranked No. 2 in the state and coached by Bob Bentley, is off to a 6-1 start after going 12-2 last season. It has won four straight and has scored over 50 points five times, including 82 points in one game.

Gaffney, coached by Dan Jones, went 11-3 last season and is currently 5-2 after a 63-59 win over Mauldin.
