SANDY, UT – One of the premier rivalries in Utah is set to renew when the Alta Hawks take on the Bingham Miners in the annual “Black and Blue Rivalry” on Thursday at 9 p.m. (EST) at Alta High School. More than 15,000 fans are expected for a game that’s part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.
Alta and Bingham have combined to win five of the last seven Class 5A state titles, playing each other for the coveted title in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Alta snapped a four-game slide in the series last season, winning 17-16 in the seventh game in 10 decided by four points or less.
The Hawks, coached by Robert Stephens, is 4-4 after going 9-3 last season. They beat West Jordan 50-18 in their last game. Senior quarterback Chipper Lucero and senior receiver Mack Richards form a dynamic duo, as Lucero has thrown for close to 2,100 yards and 23 TDs – 892 and 10 to Richards.
The Miners are coming off a 10-3 season in which they lost to Syracuse 21-16 in the state semifinals. This season, the David Peck-coached team is 9-0 and ranked second in the state after a 52-0 blasting of Copper Hills. Junior quarterback Kyle Gearig has accounted for close to 1,600 total yards and 24 TDs, while senior back Scott Nichols has ran for over 900 yards and 13 scores.
