The Northville vs. Novi rivalry began in 1971 when Novi School District was formed and Novi opened. The two schools are separated by Baseline Road, in the 1980’s the local newspaper created the “Baseline Jug”. The jug is awarded to the winning team after the game and is made of an old dairy jug donated by the local dairy company, Gersey’s Dairy. This game is by far the biggest and most anticipated game in the area. These two teams are a few miles apart but, Northville’s home field –Tom Holzer Ford Field is less than a mile from Novi High School.
Northville scored the first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter, and the extra point was good, making the score 7-0. A field goal attempt by the Mustangs in the second quarter failed, and the half ended with a score of Mustangs 7, Wildcats 0. Novi started the second half with renewed vigor, returning the kick-off to Northville’s 30 yard line. A successful kick tied the score at 7-all. Northville responded with another touchdown in the third quarter, regaining the lead by a score of 14-7. Again, Novi tied the score, after a long run resulted in a Wildcat touchdown. Overtime play began with the Wildcats winning the coin toss, and giving the ball to Northville. With a successful kick by Northville, the score was 21-14. Novi failed to score on their attempt, ending the game with a Mustang victory.
