September 21, 2013

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — The state’s highest-scoring team relied on its defense this night.

The East Leopards dominated the Highland Rams 29-7 in the annual “Neighborhood Fight” on Friday night. More than 5,000 fans attended the game at Highland High School, which played host to the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

The Leopards forced seven turnovers and held the Rams to just 129 yards of total offense to take a 61-45-7 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1914.

Junior back Preston Curtis had 54 rushing yards, a TD and an interception to be named the Great American Rivalry Series Most Valuable Player. Senior back Malakai Solovi added 88 yards, two scores and an INT for East.

Both teams are back in action next Friday night with East (5-0) at Cyprus and Highland (3-2) hosting Clearfield.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
