Moeller 13, St. Xavier 7 (09/26/2014)

September 27, 2014

This game was the 58th all-time meeting between two longtime rivals, with Moeller leading the series, 38-19. Tickets for the matchup went on sale to the general public at 1:00PM the day before the game, by 2:00 PM there were none left. For those lucky enough to get a ticket, the atmosphere at Ballaban field was electric. However, the die-hard fans of these two schools would not be denied the opportunity to see their Bombers and Crusaders play as the hill and athletic complex next to the stadium filled up with an overflow crowd.

The game was a defensive show down as both teams struggled to move the ball down the field. Fortunately for Moeller, they had game MVP Matt Coughlin on their side. Matt kicked two long field goals giving the Crusaders the edge. The first was a 37-yard field goal following a fumble recovery and stalled drive giving the Crusaders a 10-0 lead. St. Xavier was able to score with a minute left in the half on a 24 yard touchdown pass to running back Ronnie Fricke. Then early in the 3rd quarter Coughlin booted a 47 yard field goal that gave the Crusaders a 13-7 advantage. This would be all that was needed and the final score. Moeller improves their overall record to 39-19 against the Bombers.
