Mission Viejo 28, Don Bosco Prep 25 (9/14/13)

September 15, 2013

MISSION VIEJO, CA — The Mission Viejo-Don Bosco Prep game went as advertised.

The Mission Viejo Diablos converted a fourth-down play after a bad snap and scored two plays later to beat the Don Bosco Prep Ironmen 28-25 in overtime on Friday night. More than 8,500 fans attended the game at Diablo Stadium. The game was part of the 2013 Great American Rivalry Series presented by the U.S. Marine Corps and Hibbett Sports.

Trailing 25-22 in overtime, the Diablos lined up for a field-goal attempt on fourth down. The snap was bad but a short pass by the holder led to a first down and Alex Suchesk ran it in from 9-yards out two plays later for the game-winner. Mission Viejo led 13-0 at halftime before a wild back-and-forth fourth quarter.

California’s Mission Viejo and New Jersey’s Don Bosco Prep have been two of the better programs in the nation recently. Both are ranked in the top 100 nationally by some media outlets.

Mission Viejo (3-0) hosts La Habra on Friday night and Don Bosco Prep (1-1) hosts Miami Central on Saturday.

What is the Great American Rivalry Series?

Each fall for over a century, high school football has been the centerpiece for families and communities on Friday night. In 2004, iHigh, Inc. created the Great American Rivalry Series to celebrate this uniquely American sport and the cultural phenomenon of “Friday Night in America.” The Series shines the spotlight on top high school football rivalries across the nation, where long-standing traditions are valued, expectations are sky high, and followers are committed.
