The original Soul Bowl concept dates back to the 1940s when Dorsey played Booker T. Washington. In 1955, Dorsey closed and Northwestern opened. The rivalry between Northwestern and Booker T. lasted until 1967, when Booker T. became a junior high. That same year, Northwestern and Jackson started their series. In the early years, the game was played on Thanksgiving Day or Eve. Since then, it has turned into Miami-Dade’s most intense rivalry and has been played annually (except for 1974,1993 and 2005). Miami Northwestern, which has won 4 Florida State Championships and the mythical National Championship in 2007, leads the series 34-13. In 2014 Jackson routed the Bulls 44-15 for their highest ever score in the Soul Bowl as well as their first victory in 10 years.
The winning team will take home the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player and the top student-athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series. Along with these awards, an alumnus from each school will be inducted into the 12th class of the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame.
