Media Release: Green Bay East (WI) vs. Green Bay West (WI)

September 15, 2015

Green Bay, WI: Sept. 11, 2015 – The Great American Rivalry Series is proud to announce that it will feature one of the oldest rivalry games in the country as the Green Bay East Red Devils host the Green Bay West Wildcats in the Series’ fifth weekend of games for 2015. This 110th year rivalry game will be presented by the United States Marine Corps and played on Friday, September 18 at West High School. Featuring some of the longest running rivalries in high school football, the 2015 Great American Rivalry Series will feature 100 showdowns nationwide. All of these great games come with great football, hard earned sweat and a heavy dose of hometown pride.

For the 12th year, the Great American Rivalry Series has selected an exclusive collection of top-notch rivalries across the country, covering 40 states and over 100 cities throughout the country. Wrapped in tradition, these annual battles excite entire communities, while celebrating the schools, their teams, and their fans. We Know Friday NightsTM

The rivalry series between Green Bay’s East and West High Schools is considered to be one of the oldest continuously played rivalries in the country, getting its start unofficially in 1895, but played continuously since 1905. The rivalry celebrated its 100th year in 2005. The 100th anniversary game was won by East 56-8. In commemoration of that game, a traveling Time Capsule trophy was created that transfers to the winning team and will do so annually until 2030. East enjoys a rich tradition of football dating back to Curly Lambeau (for whom the Green Bay Packers’ field is named) and Jim Crowley. The Red Devils play at East Stadium, which used to be called City Stadium, which was the home of the Packers from 1925 to 1956. Overall, East leads the series 51-39-3.

The winning team earns year-long bragging rights and will take home the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player and the top student-athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series. Along with these awards, an alumnus from each school will be inducted into the 12th class of the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame.
