The Jesuit Gridiron Classic is one of the rare rivalries that got its start in the 1890s. Beginning in 1891, these two teams have met on and off 67 times, with Gonzaga leading the series 36-28-3. During the 14 year run of the City Championship Football Series (1948-1962), Gonzage appeared 4 times. NFL player Cam Johnson, former Stanford QB and 2012 Rose Bowl Champ Kevin Hogan, and Darryl Hill, the first African American football player at the Naval Academy are notable alumni of Gonzaga. Kevin Plank, the Founder and CEO of Under Armour and F. Lal Heneghan, an Executive Vice President with the San Francisco 49ers are alumni of Georgetown Prep.
The winning team on the field earns year-long bragging rights with the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Army. The game’s Most Valuable Player and the top student-athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series.
