Cumberland, MD: Oct. 31, 2015 – The Great American Rivalry Series is proud to announce that it will feature the historic Maryland rivalry game between the Fort Hill Sentinels and the Allegany Campers on Saturday, November 7 in the Series’ twelfth weekend of games for 2015. This game will be presented by the United States Marine Corps and will be played at Greenway Avenue Stadium, a field shared by the two schools all season long. Featuring some of the longest running rivalries in high school football, the 2015 Great American Rivalry Series will feature 100 showdowns nationwide.  All of these great games come with great football, hard earned sweat and a heavy dose of hometown pride.

For the 12th year, the Great American Rivalry Series has selected an exclusive collection of top-notch rivalries across the country, covering 40 states and over 100 cities throughout the country. Wrapped in tradition, these annual battles excite entire communities, while celebrating the schools, their teams, and their fans. We Know Friday NightsTM

This series got its start back in 1932 when Fort Hill was still known as Penn Avenue.  The first official game in the series came in 1936 and since then the Sentinels have a 53-32-4 record. The game traditionally serves as Homecoming for both schools, including the presentation of each school’s Homecoming Queen and court at halftime. It is played at Greenway Avenue Stadium in Cumberland, which serves as the home field for both schools. Built in the 1930s by the Public Works Administration, the field opened for play in 1937 as Fort Hill Stadium.  Its name was changed to Greenway Avenue Stadium in 1987. Locally known simply as “Homecoming”, the game routinely draws 10 to 14 thousand fans, in a town of about 20,000 people. The winner keeps “The Black Kettle”, a traveling trophy with the scores from all the previous games engraved.
