October 14, 2015

WXRLLogoDepew, NY: Oct. 9, 2015 – The Great American Rivalry Series is proud to announce that it will feature the historic New York Rivalry known as “The Game” between the Depew Wildcats and the Lancaster Legends on October 16 in the Series’ ninth weekend of games for 2015. The Great American Rivalry Series will be featuring this game as a LIVE VIDEO BROADCAST on the Great American Rivalry Series broadcast network in partnership with WXRL Radio of Lancaster, NY, beginning at 7 PM EST (BROADCAST LINK HERE). This game will be presented by the United States Marine Corps at Depew’s home field. Featuring some of the longest running rivalries in high school football, the 2015 Great American Rivalry Series will feature 100 showdowns nationwide.  All of these great games come with great football, hard earned sweat and a heavy dose of hometown pride.

For the 12th year, the Great American Rivalry Series has selected an exclusive collection of top-notch rivalries across the country, covering 40 states and over 100 cities throughout the country. Wrapped in tradition, these annual battles excite entire communities, while celebrating the schools, their teams, and their fans. We Know Friday NightsTM

The Game is one of the oldest and most passionate rivalries in New York.  The Wildcats will host the Legends, who were known for many years as the Redskins until changing the mascot and team name this year. The rivalry got its start in 1919. In the 1930s the rivalry got so intense that the game had a 8 year hiatus as fan safety became a concern. Locally, western New Yorkers still consider this to be one of the fiercest games around. The Legends lead the series 48-32-6 despite their 13-6 loss to Depew in a 2014 Great American Rivalry game. This annual game draws nearly 20,000 fans.

The winning team will take home the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player and the top student-athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series. Along with these awards, an alumnus from each school will be inducted into the 12th class of the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame.

You can find more information at or through the Series’ Twitter (@AmericanRivalry), Facebook, YouTube and Instagram accounts. Previews and past results will be posted throughout the season with details of the teams and the history of the rivalries, and after the game. Fans can relive the excitement with photo galleries and game recaps.
