Concord vs. Kannapolis Kicks off 13th Annual Great American Rivalry Series

The “Battle for the Bell”

Kannapolis, NC:  August 18, 2016 – The 2016 Great American Rivalry Series, presented by the United States Marines, is proud to announce it will kick off in North Carolina on August 18th at the famed “Battle for the Bell” rivalry game between the Concord Spiders and the AL Brown Wonders. Featuring some of the longest running and tradition rich high school rivalries in the nation, Rivalry Series will begin its season at the Concord vs AL Brown game, which will be the first of 100 showdowns highlighted in 40 different states in this year’s Series’ schedule.

The Rivalry Series features games from California to Washington and from Florida to Maine. Great American Rivalry Series founder Rick Ford notes, “These are those very special games, contested every year between longtime rivals that create memories for a lifetime. The winner takes home the winning trophy, but most importantly, the pride of an entire community”

The Concord Spiders and AL Brown Wonders (also referred to as K-Town) will take the field for week one of the 2016 Series in what may be the last meeting of these two schools due to NCSAA redistricting. It is the longest continuous rivalry in North Carolina, getting its start in 1924 and played annually since 1931. It is also considered to be the 15th oldest rivalry in the country.  Concord leads the series at 42-39-4, but since 1976, K-Town has won 25 out of 39. Over 8,000 fans are expected to pack the stands in Kannapolis to witness this highly anticipated clash between these historic rivals.

“We are excited to partner once again with the Great American Rivalry Series to feature games like this,” said Leroy Pennington, Marketing Specialist for the United States Marines “The elite status of the Series and these games fit perfectly with the Elite Warrior ethos of the Marine Corps, and we are proud to stand alongside these outstanding young athletes.”

The winning team on the field earns year-long bragging rights and ownership of the historic Bell as well as the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player of the game and the top Student-Athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series. In addition to these awards, an alumnus from each school will be inducted into the 13th class of the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame.
