The Great American Rivalry Series is proud to announce that it will feature Southeast Arizona’s Copper Pick Trophy game between the Bisbee Pumas and the Douglas Bulldogs in the Series’ second weekend of games for 2015. This year will be the 145th meeting of the two schools. The game will be presented by the United States Marine Corps and played on August 28 at Warren Ballpark in Bisbee, which, being built in 1909, is one of the oldest professional baseball fields in the country.

For the 12th year, the Great American Rivalry Series has selected an exclusive collection of top-notch rivalries across the country, covering 40 states and over 100 cities throughout the country. Wrapped in tradition, these annual battles excite entire communities, while celebrating the schools, their teams, and their fans. We Know Friday NightsTM

BisbeePickAs one of the oldest rivalry games in the country, the Pumas and Bulldogs have met 144 times since 1906 and both are hoping they will be the team to etch their name on the historic Copper Pick. This unusual trophy is an 18” replica of a miner’s pick and is formed from copper which is mined in Bisbee and smelted in Douglas. The use of the pick began in 1944 when Douglas principal Charles R. Johnson recommended some sort of symbol of sportsmanship between the two teams. Bisbee placed the pick in their trophy case after a 21-6 victory in 1944, which was highlighted by a 74 yard scoring run by halfback Bill Penn. Overall, Douglas leads 77-59-8, but Bisbee has brought home the pick the past two years.

BisbeePumasThe Bisbee-Douglas game was selected as one of the top 100 must-see match ups for the 12th Annual Series and is always a highlight in southeastern Arizona when the teams meet. The Pumas will be seeking to take home the Copper Pick for a third straight year while the Bulldogs hope to take back to Douglas with them.

The winning team will not only have year-long bragging rights with the Copper Pick, but will also take home the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player and the top student-athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series. Along with these awards, an alumnus from each school will be inducted into the 12th class of the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame.
