AL Brown vs. Concord to Kickoff 12th Annual Great American Rivalry Series
North Carolina “Battle for the Bell” HS Football Rivalry Receives National Attention
Kannapolis, NC: August 12, 2015 – The Great American Rivalry Series is proud to announce that its kickoff to the 2015 High School Football Rivalry season, presented by the United States Marine Corps, will begin in North Carolina on August 20 with the famed “Battle for the Bell” rivalry game between the AL Brown Wonders and the Concord Spiders. Featuring some of the longest running rivalries in the high school football, this game will be the first of 100 showdowns featured nationwide by the Great American Rivalry Series in 2015. All of these great games come with great football, hard earned sweat and hometown pride.
For the 12th year, the Great American Rivalry Series has selected an exclusive collection of top-notch rivalries across the country, covering 40 states and over 100 cities throughout the country. Series founder Rick Ford notes that, “With all the traditions of bonfires, pep rallies, and parades, high school football has brought communities together to watch their teams compete in these classic battles for more than a hundred years.”
The AL Brown Wonders (also referred to as K-Town) and the Concord Spiders will take the field for week 1 of the 2015 Series in what may be the last meeting of these two schools after NCSAA redistricting. This rivalry is the longest continuous rivalry in North Carolina, getting its start in 1924 and played annually since 1931. It is also considered to be the 15th oldest rivalry in the country. Concord leads the series at 42-38-4, but since 1975 K-Town has won 24 out of 38.Over 7,000 fans are expected to pack the stands in Kannapolis to witness this highly anticipated clash between these historic rivals.
The AL Brown-Concord game was selected as one of the top 100 must-see match ups for the 12th Annual Series and will be a rare early game as it will be played before the start of the school year due to an agreement with the NCSAA. The Wonders and Spiders will both enter the game hungry as they attempt to start the year off on the right track with a big rivalry win.
The winning team on the field earns year-long bragging rights with the historic Bell, and the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player and the top student-athlete from each school are also recognized as part of the Series. Along with these awards, an alumnus from each school will be inducted into the 12th class of the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame.
